About the Artist
I have been working in clay for 32 years and was a painter
and landscape contractor/designer before. I am still active in doing landscape design in addition to my ceramics.
I studied ceramics and design at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College, Queens
College, and Penland School of Crafts, in North Carolina. I also have my Associates Degree in Business Landscaping.
I have taught at various pottery studios, Queens University in Charlotte, and given workshops for various NC colleges and
clay groups. I am affiliated with 30 galleries and museums in the US and have my work in many private and corporate
collections. I sell my work through high-end craft shows, wholesale and retail galleries, and at my home gallery. My contemporary, one
of a kind white earthenware is brightly decorated with underglazes and slips in a water color fashion, then clear glazed and
fired to cone 05. My decorating style has a somewhat oriental/southwestern flavor. However, in the last few years
after many trips to Santa Fe, my work has broadened and returned to raku. Raku firing is a process using propane gas
in an outside kiln, with the piece of pottery being removed at 2000 degrees F and immediately put into a can with reduction
material. This way I have been able to catch the colors and the light of the red mountains and the sunlight of the Southwest.
The incredible beauty of the mountain range views gave me an overwhelming spiritual feeling and attachment to the earth.
This is very much reflected in my new work called "The Santa Fe Landscape Series." This series is made up
of thrown and slabbed bowls, wall hangings and sculptural "Storytellers." I plan to keep reaching and learning, producing new artistic work
in new approaches to clay. Enjoy my pots, for each is made with love and excitement. I have sent you a part of
me, my love of clay, life and earth. -Lambeth Marshall
